This week for my reading I found an artist in the Juxtapose illustration 2 book named Rachel Sumpter (Sumpter, 2011). I looked at her work for inspiration into colour and using colour for shading. As you see here.
One illustration that had court my eye the most is this one here.

I am going to explain in this blog what I like about this illustration and how I am applying this into a former study and future referencing for my own illustrations and career aspects. I am going to start off with the background colouring. I am in love with the colour pallet I think it is exciting and mystical. I look at this work and it makes me think of what dreams would look like after a few to many coffees on a late night. Its trippie sure but I think thats what is most attracting. The other concept of this illustration that I like is the men. They look like 6 wise men of some Chinese folklore and that to me is appealing. The cloaks are beautifully designed and have some form of magical aspect to them. I think of wizards. Harry Potter mostly you know this guy (Dumbldore, 2019).
I love how I can make anything I look at into some Harry Potter fan art. Any who. Back to the illustration. I was talking about the men in the picture and what I haven’t talked about yet is their fantastic beards. Such amazing, rainbow, unicorn style beards, Yep them beards. I found them at first as an eyesore I thought they took too much of the beauty of the background that the mens cloaks. But the more I looked at this image. The more I grew to love it and the more I thought about wizards. Preferably this guys beard though (Bernews, 2013).
Yeah. Definitely a resemblance there. I loved this movie as a child. Disneys sword of the stone (Disney, 1963). Merlin had to be my favourite. The water scene was cool where him and Arthur turned into fish, swimming away from the mean fish. I’m sat here wondering if I still have this movie on dvd.
Back to the point of this illustration. As you see this illustration can take me back to my childhood. Here is how I can take this work for inspiration to future illustrations piece that I could create. I am basing my work for mostly children and my fault is that I do make my work just specifically for children to find finny. I could try and adventure out in different methods for my work. Example this work takes me back to different memories that I have of different characters and how I can fit it to my favourite films and genres. I would like to spread this out into my illustrations. I could look on how to make them more bedtime friendly or settled for a dreamy feel. Like Sumpter’s work.
If I was to take this on board for my teaching I would provide this as an example of using colour and digital techniques to create a mystical background. This can be done within Photoshop using the smudge tools and the spray-can tool. I could also use this as a reference of using a colour pallet and learning what enhances a colour or how to create complimentary colours. This as an digital teacher could benefit from as its hard to always explain and compromise an example of complimentary colours without having to say cool and warm tones or pastel colours. Its always better to show a class what you can do than trying to sit there and explain it. Therefore as an example I would use Sumpters work as mine with the high gratitude to her colour pallet choice.
Overall I found her work to bring back a lot of fun and exciting memories and That I could use her as a guidance to using colours. I hope you found my work to be useful.
Until the next blog
