My Over Due Weekly Review (GET IT)

Okay here it goes, this is my over due weekly review. Its over due because I hate writing, I’ll explain more on why I hate writing another time. I’ll start off with what i’m doing for the year and that is a multi textual children’s book which is about foxes, the book is targeted for children and children with specific learning difficulties/ disabilities, I want to include braille and squeakers for children who are blind. Thats what I want to do for the year and hope to achieve at least a pitch on what I have been intended to do which could be a A3 double spread page of the fox in an environment with the multi-textures involved and having my case studies included and making sure i prove that this topic has been deer to my heart and wanted to show i’m dedicated, this book is for children and children with specific needs so i’m not going to be ignorant and go into this with no knowledge and understanding.

From all that, I’ll mention what i’m doing for semester 1, and from that I did my first module which was a reflection report, I didn’t like it if I’m honest the work i did seemed extremely hard for me, however i did manage to do it and I seemed confident enough to hand it in. Bare in mind I did get support with the academic support team on campus, Which i’ll explain further in a different blog.  Talking about blogs I did that this year, I started up wordpress and personally its going okay, just making sure that i have a kick up the backside with updating my weekly reflections and blog post as its a 3rd of my degree and i cant slack on that. other than that i am enjoying it, i feel quick professional writing up blogs and posting my weekly reviews, keeps me organised which is what i need to do for when i become a teacher.

After the blogs, let me see what did I do? Oh I did my proposal and treatment and let me tell you it was a the most stress worthy month of my academic life. I did struggle a lot, but I did get so much support and help with my written work and the presentation at the end of the module. I personally enjoyed exploring what i’m doing and how I was going to go from A to B to an end product at the end of the year. I made sure I showed my passion and dedication which I have done since then. This included my artist research with for now i have bullet pointed, I know thats bad but its was only because I do struggle with words. Which hopefully be sorted for me to do easily and independently, I’ll explain more in a different blog that I mentioned earlier. However the research is going well and its on going each time I come across in my journey.

Now on the talk of research, Harvard Referencing. That was a nightmare to get my head round but thank goodness I can do it. In classes I must have half a book full of notes and tricks on Harvard referencing and how to do it, it want until the last few weeks on my proposal and treatment I got the hang of how to reference and image or piece of text and the difference from a website to a book, urgh. It was tough but thankfully I got the gist of it and I am able to do it. From that I was able to create a bibliography which is still on going but its easier to do when you know how to Harvard reference, the trick i found that made it easier is when i have a source I just make sure i reference it straight away and it saves time in the long run on trying to find it again and reference it later down the line.

I spoke about the presentation which I did and I must say I loved it, I like being able to speak passionately about my product and being organised which showing a binder that includes my presentation and a copy of my proposal and treatment so that if they wanted to ask questions I could reference with the proposal and treatment which they had a copy of and if they felt like they were getting lost with the presentation it was printed on paper for them to look at and follow. I found this useful and easier for me and the panel.

After all that i started doing my statement of intent, its on going and i’m getting help with  it from off the academic support team. The statement of intent is basically taking my proposal and treatment and shorten it down into a document of a minimum 1000 words. I’m getting comfortable on doing this and knowing my help is there. The stress behind it isn’t as bad as I have the help, however i’m just naturally a stress head.

On a Friday the class took part of a screen printing class, It went well as the start. A few disagreements on what i wanted for the trees to look like for the image (I went with trees to link with my book theme and environments as i mentions in the first semester I wanted to do environments and character building) but we came up with a design and went with it, the price was a little shock factor for a Plastic green screen and a piece of felt with my image on but I understand the costs of separate materials and ink and printing.  I can be really expensive. The method that was used (which I also documented in my sketchbook)

  • starts with creating a design which I did on illustrator and i came up with a tree design to fit with what I wanted to do for my environments for the book, I added a gradient on Photoshop and came up with a button like effected.
  • I then sent the file off to a printer which prints the design out on a specific fabric which you can print with, by this i mean the ink can transfer through the material which prints the design.
  • I then attached a plastic screen frame to the fabric with the design on. by using double sided tape on the plastic part and then once the fabric was on I placed heavy duty tape to secure the fabric and plastic together. This creates the screen.
  • I then place side by side paper which I wanted to transfer the image onto, to get the image onto the paper I had to use a form of paint which as acrylic and acrylic medium to thin the paint into a ink formula (thats what I meant by using ink)
  • I then placed the screen down portrait on to paper and added the ink formula along the top, I then used a squeegee at a 45 degree angle to spread the ink. I then lifted the screen and hey presto the image had been transferred through.
  • I repeat the steps until i’m satisfied with the images i’ve produced.

Here is an image of the best one I’ve created which i liked the most, bare in mind you first couple will bleed with the ink, however my work got ruined because the screen got damaged in the cleaning process, to clean the screen you need water and a soft sponge, I on the other hand pressed too hard on the screen and made a dash rip which was noticeable until I printed a few images.

Due to this i tried the vinyl method with the screen print which starts off like this

  • I places a glue substance on the screen which is placed portrait on paper that I wanted to use
  • i then squeegeed the glue substance at a 45 degree angle to transfer the image onto the paper.
  • once done that let the glue dry and wash your screen with a cleaning substance that really stinks, if you have asthma please be careful.
  • once dried place a shiny vinyl of your choice above and take it to the hot press, leave for 10 seconds and then lift up the hot press by via handle.
  • After this is done let it cool down and peel off the vinyl, this will then leave a cool image and shiny effect on the paper with your design.

Here is what the image turned out, i loved how the vinyl make a rise in the image which gave me an idea for braille, I might just have too look further into methods.

I placed all my screen prints in my sketch book, which lead me on doing mono printing, due to some of my research in artist named Jim Butler I came up with an idea for mono printing and watercolour idea with the tree design, I did this by

  • Placing watercolour blotches where the tree tops would be and let then dry, because they don’t take that long  4to dry i decided to prepare for the mono printing.
  • to start the mono printing I get a plastic A4 sheet and place an ink called block ink in a tray (only use a 50 pence piece amount of ink) and a roller and spreed the ink on the plastic A4 sheet. make sure its fully covered on a covered work space use newspaper for this or a dining table cover preferably waterproof (as ink goes everywhere).
  • Then using the watercolour paper with the blotches face it blotched colour down on the ink and have a copy of the tree design facing up towards you (just note think of a mirror and reflect opposite when doing the watercolour and the ink transfer.
  • once the papers and on the ink sheet, trace the outline or any shading ( I only traced  the outline) be gentle and just take your time, as there no rush in how you do art.
  • After its all traced lift up carefully and it’ll reveal a cool design.

Here is one that I like the most, I recorded my mono prints in my sketchbook, I loved how the images came out and I did it for a different approach to environments and using art techniques.

For my textures and textual case studies which I named Case studies: Sensory play groups. Are on going, I did a document and I did loads of research into ethics and what fabrics is good for kids and how observing children is important. I looked at books such as Ethics (Seedhouse, 2009), Seeing Young Children (Bentzen, 2005) and Fabric Manipulation (Singer, 2013). To find the right fabrics for me to use on a budget I looked on the Internet and found intertek website (Intertek.com, 2018). So far I’m doing good progress.

So far I have achieved, development into my environments, created a character and attached fabric to them, Collected a lot of research that is on going, completed a module, did a couple of experimental work within my sketchbook and started my case studies research and preparation.

Where am I at? I’m currently on track with progress into my multi textual children’s book and have a character and environment prepared.

My aims are now to carry on my former research and develop a case study which is suitable for children and children with specific learning needs, with a clear under standing on ethics and observing. Until next week. bye for now.

TO DO LIST!

This week I have been given a to do list for my multi textual children’s book. This blog will have a brief description of what I had to do and why I had to proceed  to do these tasks.

To start off with the week. I sat with my tutors and gone through an action plan that I needed to do  for my research into what is needed for a multi textual children’s book? How will I know what children need? And is there anything that can help with my current studies? I was given a list by one of my tutors that had everything that was needed to do for that week. Here is the list that i was given.

To break down on what was asked for:

I got asked by my tutor to collect research into textual prints of which could be used for current study into braille. I looked into braille. Sources shown me that braille is manipulated into sections. Like this imagery shown (Mason and McCall, 1997).

IMG_0382.jpg

I figured I was able to combine the braille into a complex textual print. Knowingly this will be time consuming and noted experimental wise things may not go to plan. I wanted to have an idea that this could possibly work and be used with my upcoming final show. Within using my research I found that I could create a brailed sentence by using expandex, vinyl and screen printing or even flock/puff. Each method has been taken quite seriously and in thoughts of children and children with learning difficulties and disabilities. This thought process is still on going and I will be keeping this method in mind for my end of project.

I was also to keep on going with my development with the aesthetic and technique which is being recorded within my sketch book. This consist on my layout presentation that I have developed in my sketchbook which are texturised to fit the theme for my project seemingly its about multi textural children’s book. I have experimental work and notes which provide me with what and how I am doing experiments and developments. I am also providing any scrap experiments to show progress and decision making towards my final product at the end of the academic year.

I was also ask to present a case study to go along side of my research. Case studies is where you present a file with legal documentation on studying a case or observing a third party. I used my case study to help with my development and understanding with children and children with specific learning difficulties and disabilities. I wanted to make sure I had full interest at heart for the children who will be reading  and observing my multi textual children’s book. I was asked to go to one of my tutors and ask for an ethics form. The ethics form is to show I have full understanding and take responsibility on the children’s safety of which I promised to not include names, age, gender or forms of personal characteristics. My goal was to write and observe children on illustrations and the demo types that I created with types of textures on them. This was to help me note down what materials I needed to use and consider while also taking on the caring needs for children with specific learning difficulties and disabilities. At this moment of time I am still processing this case study and will be making phone calls to schools before the Christmas period.

I am continuing to use the academic coaches which are based on campus. I use these coaches to help with my written work. I intend to use them to guide me in a written style of which I can work with at an easier pace which can benefit me with my own learning difficulty and in becoming a teacher. I have found that within note taking. Bullet pointing is a good way of myself getting ideas down and getting preparation for structuring a sentence. I will continue to use this as I have noted that this helps with my  writing strategy and I am wanting to continue this into my teacher training. I found that I could take on my strategy and being able to teach others and students how to bullet point to help structure a sentence together.

I was also asked to go and find some research into children’s books. I have found some research and this is still on going within a research file.  I have came across some books already of which I had in mind. An example for what books I have looked is Spot’s Camping  Trip (Hill, 2005) of which I found the art style is appealing for children and children with specific learning difficulties ad disabilities. I found that the soft illustration is appealing for children and which in using textures and fabrics. I have found that I can take on board the simple and soft layout of illustration for my multi textual children’s book. But I am on going my research until I come with a final plan.

So much so That I have even looked out side the box and found a book called Winnies Midnight Dragon (Thomas and Paul, 2008). I looked at this type of book with the note of it not being appealing to children with learning difficulties and disabilities but I have to consider that every child would want to look at my book, so for a consideration Ive looked at sketchy and rugged art style like Winnies Midnight Dragon (Thomas and Paul, 2008). I have took careful deliberation with my studies and making a target audience but I am staying open minded towards every child out there. I note I can reach everyone’s needs but with the research of illustrations and children’s books that are a little more spooky and weird I am able to try and manipulate this into my project. An example could be my character goes through a spooky environments and the child have to feel and find the character through rumble or spider webs. I know for own experience with children that spider webs will make them panic but its a thought and not all children are as scared as others. This is based on characteristics of the child.

A quick SWOT analysis of what may happen and possible hindrances that could proceed in my current research and studying.

My strengths that I have within doing this task is my research skills and social talking. I am able to provide the evidence that I am look into for my multi textual children’s book’s which will include children’s books and illustrators. Case studies and targets for my final product which will be on going until the end of the academic year.  Weaknesses I could possibly run into are not able to get a place for my case studies, time management or not having a full understanding of the project in hand. I will make sure I do not interact with these problems as If I do come across a potential problem like for example not having full understanding of the project; Meaning understanding children with specific learning difficulties and disabilities. I wont allow this as I could find references and books on the subject. The opportunities I will come across is that I am able to gain more experience within a classroom or interacting with an education environment. I am taking this as an opportunity for my future career into teaching and have some experiences for my teacher training. The treats I could possibly face is not having a place for my case studies of which could hinder my chances for experience and extended research for my multi textual children’s book. I will make sure I find as many backups as I can so that I can have at least a chance in doing experiences and having extend research. I hope for my future I will have the opportunities to extend my learning, my understanding and professional intake within becoming a teacher.

until the next time

Media

What media will be used within the work?

Media. It does depend as an illustrator and a creator what media you want to loose. Example I’m a traditionalist and a digital artist. I use media which cross from Illustrator to watercolours, even monoprinting.

Within my project of this year for my BA Hons I am doing my experimental work as traditional work. and my finals or some finals as digital. Depending down the end of the year if i change my mind.

I’ll start with my software I use. I do my digital work with Illustrator and Photoshop. I cut between the two. An example:

Screen Shot 2019-03-22 at 11.17.54

Here is a make of my trees in Illustrator.  This software I use for when i am creating my content. I use the pen tool and I like to follow tutorials with in illustrator to help with my creations. Example have you ever looked on YouTube a channel called pixels and bracket. I found the tutorial on creating flat design pot plants (Bracket, 2018). Of which I found to work for me in creating woodland features and using my tutors tutorials in lectures. I use these as a guideline for myself and embrace a wider learning.

I also use Photoshop:

Screen Shot 2019-03-22 at 11.31.22

Of which you can see here I use Photoshop to organise my work and add colour either with the paint bucket tool or the paint brush tool and magic wand. Again I’m obsessed with tutorials and this one YouTuber called Laura Price shows a brilliant digital paint tutorial on Photoshop. So much so its showing different tools and how to use them for beginners (Price, 2018). I recommend to go to her YouTube channel and check her out.

This is the software within media that I use. I am using this through out my BA hons illustration and for my multi textual children’s book. I am able to collide fabrics and other form of media within my digital work by hand cutting out my areas of which need to be textured. My intentions is to carry on with my digital work of which for the next semester I am able to use my skills for my end of year final show and collaborations with fabrics.

until the next blog

Creative inspiration

Are there other creative works that could provide inspiration for the current project, or perhaps compete with it? If so how are they similar or different?

My creative inspirations vary with my moods of the day. Like my personality my likes are quite out there which goes for what I like with art and what inspires me. My favourite artist is John Bond. Take a look of his work here.

I love this piece that Bond did for his inktober this year of a boy and his dog having adventures within the autumn period (Bond, 2018). The thing that drew me closer to Bonds work is the fact he hand draws and uses watercolours of which is a top favourite technique of mine. I love the colour of the leaves. It make you want to jump into the pile with the boy.

Bond is only one of my favourite artists a second favourite of mine I’d have to say Don Bluth (Bluth, 2005)

IMG_0542

I got a hold of the book on storyboarding which captures Don Bluth’s work and one of which as you can see is All Dogs Go To Heaven (All Dogs Go To Heaven, 1989) This was a  preference animation I liked as a child and I still to this day enjoy finding clips on YouTube to admire the style of illustrations that Bluth created. Here is a clip from YouTube I’d recommend to watch All Dogs Go To Heaven: End scene  (YouTube, 2016). I mention this scene to watch as if you are a dog lover you will shed a tear. I am in my 20’s and I still cry when I watch this part of the film. Or even if you are not a fan of the animal kingdom you would appreciate the animation style and illustrations for the animal form and movement for the film.

I take a lot of inspiration from the music I play, I’ve always been a love of the 80’s but an example of this space and foxes copyI got inspiration while listening to Scouting for girls – She’s so lovely (Lovely, 2018). It’s very strange how I managed to create this illustration with link to my multi textual children’s book and attaining inspiration by the song from scouting for girls. However like someone once told me its like an emotional rollercoaster you love, hate, excite and worry all at once just from the songs on your playlist. I can explain I’m a very upbeat person and I love to show my personality and likes from listening to music. Of which I was able to by expressing myself from wondering off into space in my own little bubble while listening to an upbeat song, while imagining foxes with space helmets. In the end of it all I created this end product you see above.

A final creator who inspires me is Roman Dirge who created the Lenore the little dead girl comics (,). Ive read the comics over the pass year and a half and grew to love them more and more. I love the art style that Dirge captures in the character Lenore and the other characters such as Ragamuffin and Pooty. The thing I love the most about these comics is the humour, Its dark and shocking but yet utterly hilarious. Dirge created everything for his comics from illustrations to scripting. So much so his publisher places little notes and messages about Dirge’s work ethic. He’s inspirational for a work enthusiastic person such as myself. He manages to create his comics within 6 months including the story, art and book cover. His publisher does mocks Dirge about not contacting him for details and updates to a point were you think I’m surprised this guy isn’t fired from his job yet. However he always provides his work in the end.  I want to mention my favourite series from Lenore is Lenore Swirlies (Swirlies and Dirge, 2018). The thing I like about this series is how you learn about Lenore and how she dead and how she’s now a zombie dead little girl.  A quick summery of this is that she dead back in a dark era and a mad scientist stole her body to try and do a crazy experiment on her. Turns out it work but to his knowledge he turned his back Lenore woke up and walked out. Things like this make me laugh so much. I did further research to find that there is animated series of Lenore on YouTube and of course I watched them and still continue to do so, I suggest you check it out I am leaving a link down below (Youtube, 2013). The reason Of why I include Dirge’s work is because I am obsessed with his work ethic and the humour for his comics.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The experiences I have made through looking into creative inspirers is that I am an open minded person when it comes to seeking inspirational talent. I look into music, gore and comedy of which In some ways I created a cute, delightful children’s page for my multi textual children’s book. Although I am dedicated to my children’s books I do love to have a down time and enjoy a good comic and listen to music or watch a film. Of which I always capture some ideas on the side. The threats that I could face from researching for inspiration is that it gives me a sense of competition in the publishing industry. Because I am a person who is drawn to gore, dark and humour. My work shows other things. I was focusing on the audience for children and children with specific learning difficulties. Granted that both styles are completely opposite but it does run in an illustrators mind that maybe my book wouldn’t be published one day. However I found as long as I keep my contacts with children’s publishers like Penguin books (Books, 2018) and MacMillan (Books, 2018) I could possibly have a chance with getting my book published. Overall I plan to keep my work unbiased and show both of my passions within my work which are dark humour and children’s/ young adults education.

Skills by my team mates

What skills will team members have to learn?

Working with a team can be difficult but awarding at the same time. The thing you have to realise when it comes to working with a team that there will be knock backs. By this I mean they may have weaknesses that hinder a performance or yourself can have weaknesses that hinder their performance vice versa.

But the best thing about working in a team is that you can under go better pitch ideas. Your work can benefit with working along side others because of the radial thinking within the group.

From my studies into this Inc. 15 quotes to inspire great teamwork Dave Kerpen says ‘No matter how smart, talented, driven, or passionate you are, your success as an entrepreneur depends on your ability to build and inspire a team.” (Kerpen, 2018). I believe this to be spot on when it comes to team building. I believe that intelligence doesn’t account for a persons performance. its the success of an entrepreneurs which gains greatness towards a team.

in further study I found that Henry Ford from wiseoldsayings says “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success” (Ford, 2018). I believe this to be another strong and valid point to team building. By this I found that being joined together to work alongside a project and having ongoing progress each week, that this provides the success with a pitch or a product coming together and having a strong out come. This along side with Kerpens quote.

I find quotes to be inspiring with in working and team building. I find having a strong quote and a drive to go along side it, makes a team building exercise more enjoyable. Quotes tend to give people hope and determination. Thats why such great leaders and educator use strong quotes to make sure their listeners are engaged and are on team with what they are saying.

I am taking on this to help myself within my projects and my work for future work. I think team work creates a stronger community within art. I am able use this within my project for my BA Hons Illustration. by doing so I am able to work in a team for my multi textual children’s book and work along side people to help my book come together. This is in consideration for my experiences and development as an illustrator and my future career.

What techniques will be used to realise the project?

What techniques will be used to realise the project? I think of this project will benefit my chances on working with children in the future and being a creator as well. I can do this by basing my projects about children and focusing everything I know on how to dedicate my work to children and children with specific learning difficulties and disabilities.

I can do this by doing competitions of which I am going to dedicate my work and base my projects on children. I can do this by doing children book covers. One of the competitions that I am considering is the Penguin children’s awards. This will be my chance to show my technique and skills with in my design work and base it on my aim on working with children for my career in teaching.

I am thinking on promoting myself with the end of the year with my final exhibition and have my multi textural children’s book finished and have people understand my purpose on making the book. I can also promote myself by applying for my PGCE and get an interview. I plan on making sure I have gained confidence and understanding in my project and my future ahead.

I will have competitors and I will have people out to be better. However I have strengths and weakness to be improved on and I am the person to make sure I improve everyday as your only as great as your last performance.

Til the next blog

Industry

At the moment the current industry practice is leaned towards books, comics, cartoons, vintage and retro. I know this by see the high street fashion, more books are being sold, my favourite artist are creating their own books, shabby sheek and comic books are becoming more popular lately with all the superhero movies and TV shows coming out. From this I am glad to say I have created a book that fits with the current industry practice, which shows that I am on trend. After my first semester has finished I am ending up with a developed and final end products, from this I will then combine my project one and project two which I did in my first semester to create my personal project for second semester, by this I mean I am creating the multi textual children’s book alongside a multi textual blanket/comforter. I am using textiles for this project. By this I am having final pages to go along with the book, a sewn blanket/comforter and any promotional packs to help my book enhance further.

Restrictions

What are the restrictions on content, if any?

The only restrictions I can think off is copyright due to the fact its a multi textual children’s book and my research is on children’s books and textured book. The problem is that I could get inspiration for the book and someone could say I’ve stolen or copied their idea. to solve this I’ll make sure I’m extra careful on what I do and how I interpret an illustration.

I hope that this wouldn’t affect me, It probably wont as all my ideas are my own. well, as far as I know from the research I’ve done for this project.

I guess if I think of another restriction could be age restriction. Maybe once I’ve made the book, children could think my books too baby-ish for a child age 9+. Maybe my book (due to if I stick to time management) isn’t clear that it’s for children with specific needs because I didn’t create braille for it. To solve this solution I’ll make sure i have a good start into researching braille and how to create them and what material could be used. To do this I’ll make a document showing my progress and update this blog of mine.

Specific Content

What specific content items, if any, are required by a client or other outside party?

Specific content will consist of competitions, From this I am entering competitions over the first semester and second semester, I am entering the V&A illustration awards, From this I am going to be creating a book cover which will gain me the creativity and skills to create a book cover suited for my own projects. I am doing this as I am creating a book and I’m progressing my skill set so that I can develop more of an advanced book cover. I am also entering the Penguin Student Design Awards, this includes me to create a book cover to which they choose. Example of this 2018 winner of the Penguin Student Design Awards, “Adult Fiction Cover Award – Raemarie Lee, Kingston University (Animal Farm by George Orwell)” (revealed and revealed, 2018), I will be doing this so I am capable to show progression in my further development with my book covers. While doing these competitions I am also doing the Macmillan Prize for illustration, this competition is about creating children’s book cover, From this I am going to enter my finished multi textual children’s book that I have created over the 2 semesters. I am doing this because I found that my book is well fitted for the Macmillan competition and I hope to expand my books influence.

Problems I Encounter

What problems might you encounter and how will you solve them?

Problems I might encounter when coming to my project could be time management for one, I’m not sure how much time I will be dedicating on each semester. However I made a timeline of what I want to achieve and when, I’m forcing myself to follow this timeline and I have an academic diary which I record dates and events of the year. Another problem maybe the equipment might not work example I travel on train to college and back each day and some days I work from home and maybe one day I run out on ink or my printer my not work. Maybe the equipment at college my not work. To solve this I plan on always having a back up plan or sketchbook development on a day that  I pencilled in for printer use or risographs.

Another problem could be that the facilities are taken up by a class that day, to solve this I’ll just find a different place to study or do development work. My project this year is all based round me showing people who I can do things on my own and finding a solution to my problems, If I encounter any problems there is always a way out. I’m making sure I can solve problems so that when it comes to me teaching I have my head in order and drill some organisation into me doing projects in the near future.
